Not Your Grandma’s Sweater

By Tracey Moro / Photography by Anne Nicolazzo

In the Urban Dictionary, the definition of a Grandma Sweater is – a sweater without a hood that contains kittens playing with yarn, teddy bears, birds in the meadow or puppies. Usually worn by your Grandma or an older woman.

We know many of you might think Grandma sweaters are frumpy, old looking and even a bit stale smelling. And most of you wouldn’t get caught wearing one.

Well, Macomb Now Magazine knows better. We know there are plenty of Grandmas out there who can pick a sweater, accessorize and look stylish. So, who better to get to show off a few winter sweaters then some firsttime Grandmas who haven’t stopped smiling since they first laid eyes on their new little grandbabies.

Grandma Kim VanGorder – Eastpointe

Kim became a Grandma on March 5, 2015 – “The happiest day of our lives,” she exclaims. Proud parents of baby Emma, Stacy and Stephen Beskange, were married in August 2013. Kim is looking forward to taking Emma up north this winter and says she regularly babysits two times a week. “I enjoy watching how she changes everyday.”

When picking out sweaters for these dear ladies we went straight to the stylists at Nordstrom at Partridge Creek and Carson’s to find some warm, stylish and “not your typical Grandma sweater.”When picking out sweaters for these dear ladies we went straight to the stylists at Nordstrom at Partridge Creek and Carson’s to find some warm, stylish and “not your typical Grandma sweater.” Personal Stylist Rosella LoDuca from Nordstrom recommends layering! “During this season, layering is a key essential for the unpredictable Michigan weather. I chose to pair thick open sweaters with pretty flowy blouses to contrast textures. By having something lightweight underneath, our Grandmas won’t overheat,” said LoDuca. Layering is the fashionable solution, most practical solution this season and it doesn’t have to stop at clothing, as you can see by layering accessories like scarves and necklaces. Lastly, this season’s trending color is bordeux. Shelia is wearing a pop of the deep burgundy in every piece. “Inspired by the changing Michigan leaves, this color adds so much warmth to any look and practically every age and complexion. Grandma sweaters don’t have to be thick and bulky. They can have color, movement, and openness, appealing to everyone – not just Grandmas.” Glamma – Sheila Paraventi Shelby Township Nicknamed by her youth pastor, Sheila became a “Glamma” Grandma, October 1, 2015 to Graeson, son to her son Luke and his wife Kyla. The proud parents live in Spring Lake, on the west side of Michigan, so Sheila visits as often as possible. “I get to see him every couple of weeks,” said Sheila. She tears up as she explains they will be moving out of the country next year on a missionary trip. “I’m so thankful for technology that we still will be able to communicate and see him.” Grandma Anna Hanovich Eastpointe Our last Grandma is Anna Hanovich who became a Grandma to Cora Charlotte Hanovich on September 6, 2015. Proud parents Ashley and Nathan Havovich live nearby. “The day she was born, it was the most amazing morning ever,” said Anna. “I’ve been waiting a very long time for this grandbaby.” Anna explained her son and his wife grew up as close neighbors, knowing each other since they were only 8-years-old. Anna is wearing the perfect color for her, and one that is bold, confident and popular too. The pull over sweater with the trendy fringe comes from Carson’s. Paired with a long necklace this sweater is perfect with jeans or leggings.
